Luke Wagner – Social Chair:
- Applications for Winter ball committee open until Thursday, 20 October.
- Apply because it’s really fun, you get to meet new people and get priority for the ball (ie. No need to sign up) which would be great because the ball will be oversubscribed.
- Refer to Pip Orchard’s post on Facebook for more information.
Peter Trussell – Male WAM Officer (Notice given by Jack Tellyn – JCR Chair as Peter was not present):
- College rivalries that you may have heard of are not real.
- Please be aware of the content of songs, and try not to spitefully chant.
- This is a university wide issue, not just St Mary’s.
Motions
SMC Baking Society – Madeleine Kavanagh
This JCR Notes:
That among all our sports and societies in St. Mary’s College, there is no single group dedicated to baking. Taking the Durham University Baking Society as a model we wish to fill this void.
This JCR Believes:
That such a society would benefit the college in numerous ways, including but not limited to; provision of cake in particularly hectic periods in the academic year as a help to reduce stress, co-operation with other societies for related events like bake sales and creating opportunities to unite baking-enthusiasts across the whole student body in St. Mary’s College
This JCR Resolves:
To introduce St. Mary’s Baking Society based on the accounts previously stated.
- Questions:
- Q: Favourite cake?
- A: Lemon drizzle cake
- Q: Are you going to be teaching people how to bake?
- A: Yes
- Q: Second favourite cake?
- A: Sticky toffee pudding
- Q: Where is the baking going to take place?
- A: Different houses across Durham.
- MOTION PASSED.
SMC Freedom Society – Jeanette Fogstad and James Jacobs
This JCR notes: There is currently no SMC society dedicated to promote and enhance student activism on terms of the students.
This JCR believes: It is important to create a platform to foster important development regarding questions of liberty and freedom using each other as recourses for the change we want to see in the world.
This JCR resolves: The establishment of St Mary’s College Freedom Society.
- No questions.
- MOTION PASSED.
SMC Disney Society – Pip Orchard
This JCR Notes:
That there is not currently any society devoted to the Walt Disney merchandise, and especially the movies connected to this corporation.
This JCR Believes:
That it will be to the benefit of students at St. Mary’s College to introduce such a society, seeing as Disney films promote positive values in an otherwise stressful day-to-day student life. Furthermore, screenings of these films in college will provide excellent bonding opportunities among students across subjects and year groups.
This JCR Resolves:
That ‘St. Mary’s Disney Society’ will be introduced as an official society, with the purpose of screening Disney movies in the JCR at convenient times which will be decided upon by the society as a whole.
- No questions (Pip Orchard was not present)
- MOTION PASSED
Removal of role of Yearbook Editor from the Standing Orders – Esther Scriven (JCR President)
This JCR Notes:
That the role of ‘Yearbook Editor’, for the past three years, has not been successful at creating a yearbook.
This JCR Believes:
That the role of ‘Yearbook Editor’ is no longer relevant, especially with the rise of social media in recent years and the consequential lack of demand from the student body.
This JCR Resolves:
To remove the role of ‘Yearbook Editor’ as a JCR position.
- Questions:
- Q: Could it be combined into another exec role?
- A: Yes, but this would need to be considered by the core exec members, and then voted again by the JCR. This would not be done for this year’s exec as none of them signed up for the role.
- Q: Why has it not been published for the past 3 years?
- A: Not entirely sure, but most likely lack of time.
- MOTION PASSED
