JCR Meeting Minutes for the First JCR Meeting of Easter Term 2025

5. Elections, Hustings and Interviews

I. Low Income and Working Class Representative

Dylan Chetcuti

  • Can’t be present, Hannah Tunnicliffe reads his hust aloud
  • Experience at Mary’s being low income and working class rep this past year
  • Aware of reputation about elitist uni
    • Working class background made him worried that he wouldn’t fit in
    • Time at Mary’s has been very inclusive and he has felt supported
  • In the past year:
    • Had meetings with college staff to make Marys’ more accessible
    • Including discussions on expansion of current discounts and bursaries through fx vouchers for Durham Grant students for sports and socs
  • If re-elected:
    • wants to ensure the implementation of schemes like these
  • Has set up the wardrobe scheme this year and wants to continue work with this
  • If re-elected wants to take a more active role
  • Make events more accessible

II. Social Chairs

Dulcie and Emelie

  • First years doing geology + marketing and management
  • Loved been involved in planning events this year through various ball committee roles
  • Making social life inclusive and reflective of what students want
  • Providing more inclusive food options
  • Working with societies such as Mixed Voices and Chapel Choir
  • Collaborate with charities for formals and invite guest speakers
  • Make use of the social committee
  • Creative collaboration, open communication
  • Great time managements skills
  • Ensure smooth running of events

    • How do you want to balance adding a charity donation on to a ticket as well as keeping the price accessible?
      • Do an optional donation
      • Pick a charity that people would like to support  ask beforehand

III. Head Teikyo Representative

Queenie Ikeda

  • First year theology student
  • Half Japanese has cultural understanding and deep personal connection
  • Foster mutual respect
  • Bringing Japanese culture into Durham
  • Celebration of major Japanese festivals throughout the year
  • Creating a  sense of belonging and familiarity
  • Collaboration with other aspects of the JCR
  • Teikyo formal
  • Easing transition from Japan to UK
  • Fortnightly welfare drop ins
  • SWAT  special welfare at teikyo  (in collaboration with WAM)
  • Initiatives during Freshers’ Week

IV. LGBTQIA+ Representative

Ace and Alex

  • First year, philosophy and theology student (Ace) and second year current VP of LGBT+ Soc (Alex)
  • Welfare role  Alex already has welfare training
  • Ideas for Freshers’ Week
    • Queer families continuation and publicise it more
  • Love formal not fully reflective of all people in the LGBTQIA+ community
    • Branding it as more widely accessible
    • Potentially making it queer prom instead
  • Signposting welfare, queer families, funds and more
  • Working with the college to make expression fund more consistent
  • Social ideas
    • Activities to have strong and inclusive community
    • Drinking and non-drinking to make them accessible for everyone

V. Sports and Societies Officer

Emma Clarke

  • Second year, biology
  • Experience on different sports execs
  • Communication within team and different groups of people
  • Supporting all club presidents
  • Give bar and toastie bar fresh look with sports and socs photos
  • Open for sports and socs formal and also for talking to presidents about how to go about it
  • Weekly calendar with weekly things going on
  • One linktree with all accounts
  • Keep volunteering going
    • Form of recognition next year for people/societies with most volunteering hours
  • Questions
    • Call Them Out (CTO) campaign has mainly been carried out via club presidents. Is this something you want to carry on and how?
    • Wants to continue CTO  having the branding with social that is posted on Facebook
    • Work with the CTO exec (that James might be setting up)
