Casual events held in and out of college that aren’t centered around a meal in the dining hall

Occur 3-4 times per term, most of which are gowned. Often with entertainment afterwards or drinks receptions.

Very similar to formals but often ungowned and a black tie dress code (e.g., Michaelmas Dinner and President’s Guest Night)

The three Mary’s balls are held once per term and include: Winter, Masqeurade, and Midsummer. These have an optional meal and entertainment afterwards including fair ground rides, bands, silent discos, and photobooths. Balls are run by different committees that you can apply to be in through the year.

For most formals and balls you will first sign up on a google form. Tickets are then allocated on a first come, first served basis. Those who are sucessfull will be sent an E-Commerce link to pay and confirm their ticket.

Tickets will be cheaper for those who are JCR members and meals are cheaper for those living in college as they have already paid for daily meals.

Formals typically cost less than £20, however balls can be more expensive due to the additional entertainment afterwards. Buying ents only tickets can be a much more affordable way to attend.

Formal Attire

Often specified as gowned / un-gowned on the Instagram or via email. Formal dinners in college are more informal than balls or gala dinners.

Ladies – Typically wear mini to midi length dresses or jumpsuits.

Gentlemen – Suits with ties (bow tie optional)

Black Tie:

Ladies – Majority choose floor length dresses with some opting for shorter lengths.

Gentlemen – Suits with bow ties

Dress codes are simply general guidelines for how to dress, please wear what you feel most comfortable in !
