Formals

Formals

Formal dinners give you the chance to dress up, embrace Mary’s tradition and enjoy a three course meal with friends. Formal dining is one of the traditions that we hold onto dearly, and are extremely proud of here at Mary’s. St Mary’s is a gowned College, meaning that we have a specific smart dress code for our dinners.

Formals take place approximately 3/4 times a term. There is a three-course dinner served in the Dining Hall, and everyone must wear their gown and remain smartly dressed throughout the dinner.

At our formal dinners, we host undergraduates, postgraduates and staff members. Formals begin with a procession into the dining hall, where you are able to purchase wine and other non-alcoholic options to drink with your meal. There is also an option to pay corkage on your wine, meaning that you pay a small additional tax to bring your own wine to a formal dinner. Once seated, the High Table of staff and alumni process into the hall to a standing reception. The JCR President will then read grace in Latin, and then the dinner begins!

Formals throughout the academic year include; Freshers’ Formal, Returners’ Formal, Burns Night Formal, The Michaelmas Dinner, Sports Formal & President’s Guest Night.
